Portrait no. 07: Philippe Gaudy (Paris)
Portrait #07: Philippe Gaudy
ICM Consultant, Paris (France)
Could you describe your job?
I am a senior consultant in the Internal Control Management deparment (ICM). I have held this position for three seasons, and this past year I began a transition phase towards a manager’s position. My time, currently more oriented towards auditing than consulting, is divided 70/30 between operational and functional tasks.
Operationally, I direct ICM activity from beginning to end, from apprehending the needs of my first-line client – the auditor – to presenting conclusions directly to the end client – the audited company – and everything in between: designating and structuring teams, defining work schedules and end product formats, conducting interviews and supervising consultants’ formalisation of documents.
Functional tasks include a variety of items: training in computer-aided auditing techniques, helping to formulate proposals, contributing to the department’s developmental projects, etc.
What is your professional background?
I joined Mazars after a university education which became more specialised as I progressed: first a degree in mechanical engineering, then a graduate degree (DESS) at the Institut d’Administration des Entreprises (Business Management Institute) in Lyon.
My internships during these five years of study awakened my interest in industrial management and allowed me to become familiar with computer-aided project management: creating and maintaining commercial websites, and the related logistics, ERP changes within the company, etc. After completing my DESS, I joined Mazars as an intern, then a consultant. I have the classic senior ICM consultant’s job: varied auditing and consulting projects for clients in every sector of activity.
What would you say to someone looking to join Mazars?
A number of people have already asked me about joining Mazars. I always tell them: be sure of what you want, because our job requires a great deal of personal dedication and adaptability. Each project is a challenge, but the return on this investment – while not systematic – takes a variety of motivating forms.
Also, there are as many personalities at Mazars as there are team members: this is an important point, because I feel that our teams function not so much hierarchically as through the quality of human relationships. So, be yourself and know how to stay humble.
What are your interests and hobbies?
Sport, definitely! Sport is something that teaches you humility, and you also need patience to learn different activities. You are rewarded for your efforts, forced to question yourself, and need to be totally dedicated in order to reach your goals.
All of this means that you learn to really understand yourself, physically as much as psychologically. And by understanding yourself better, you are able to better understand others. My sports (squash, mountain biking and hydrospeeding) are a great way to let off steam and a great excuse to travel and see what is happening on the other side of the world…
