Portrait #05: Michael Newton
Audit Manager (New York, USA)
Could you describe your job?
I’m an audit manager in Mazars’ New-York office. My responsibilities include planning, executing and completing legal audits for a diverse selection of our clients. On such assignments, my position enables me to see the assignment from start to finish. What’s expected of me now is not so much fieldwork but more to lead the team, coach and mentor them.
Outside of legal audit, I am also involved in Sarbanes-Oxley work, as well as due diligence and consulting assignments. There again, my role is to lead the team and to manage the overall client relationship.
What is your professional background?
I received my Master’s degree in Engineering Science from Trinity College,Oxford University in 1998. In 1999, I joined PricewaterhouseCoopers in Manchester, UK, where I spent 3 years and obtained my Chartered Accountancy qualification.
After qualifying I transferred on a two year secondment with PwC to their Barbados office in the West Indies, working in the offshore financial services sector. At the end of this secondment, I moved to New York City and joined the Mazars office team with whom I’ve been working with ever since.
What would you say to someone looking to join Mazars?
There’s a lot to say. First of all, Mazars is a great place for someone who’s willing to work hard and prove themselves. If you show you’re able to perform well, you’ll be rewarded in numerous different ways. In addition, the relationships between staff and partners or senior management are very open. Senior managers and partners are available when you need them and they’re willing to help and assist younger employees.
I’d also like to stress the fact that we are a growing office. Which leads me to another very interesting point about working here: you feel you’re part of an international organisation. I have personally worked with my Mazars colleagues in Paris, London, Italy and Hong-Kong, and I truly enjoy working with them on a large variety of clients.
And last but not least, I would say our office here is in a great location in midtown Manhattan, close to the Rockefeller Centre and Radio City Hall, and only minutes away from Central Park.
What motivates you the most?
What I really appreciate is the fact that I can talk directly to the partners on a daily basis both on a personal and professional level, discussing client assignments and setting out my own personal career path.
I also enjoy the amount of decision-making and client-facing work I’m doing. This gives me the opportunity to prove myself and to progress to the next level of senior manager and ultimately partner in the long term.
