Portraits of Mazars staff

Portrait no. 01 : François Monville (Budapest, Hongrie)
Portrait #01: François Monville
Partner, manager of Mazars in Hungary
Could you describe your job?
I manage Mazars's Hungary office, located in Budapest. My position leads me to exercise responsibilities in several areas. My first obligation is to guarantee the technical quality of our services, which must be at the same level in Budapest as in Shanghai or Paris. My second responsibility is to manage the 97 women and men employed by our office. I also oversee Mazars's sales growth in Hungary, to ensure a strong and lasting presence in the country. This necessitates a long-term analysis of our local development strategy, in cooperation with the partners in charge of international development: How do we increase our brand awareness? How do we ensure better technical performance than our competitors? These are exciting challenges. Finally, I coordinate all the services which we offer our clients: auditing, tax consulting and chartered accounting.
What is your professional background?
I have spent my entire professional career at Mazars. Following a double university course in law and accounting, I entered the Rouen office in 1995, the year of the Mazars-Guérard merger. I remained for three years, in a generalist role, which is very useful to me today.
Then I left for Dublin, where I worked with Irish subsidiaries of large listed companies (Pernod Ricard, in particular) and in pension funds. I would add that my Irish experience allowed me early familiarity with Anglo-Saxon accounting standards, which have now had such a strong influence on international standards.
On returning to France, in the Paris office, I had the opportunity to work on the consolidated accounts of a number of large clients, before specialising in Transaction Support.
After two years spent working on acquisition audits, I wanted to experience a country with rapid economic growth, which had recently joined the European Union. I chose to manage the development of an office in this setting, which is how I arrived in Budapest in September 2003.
I would like to make the point that I had the good luck to encounter, over the course of my career, a number of partners who impacted me strongly. I believe this opportunity to work in close proximity with partners and managers is specific to Mazars, and that it allows the transmission of those values which guide us in our work.
What would you say to someone looking to join Mazars?
If they truly want to be in charge of their own professional development, then Mazars is the ideal audit organisation for them. Personal initiative is encouraged, and the means exist for these initiatives to be realized.
I would also tell them that Mazars, more than its competitors, will allow them to develop their leadership talents.
What motivates you the most?
I would simply say that I love my work. First, because auditing takes place "close to the ground" at Mazars, allowing real proximity with companies and constant contact with our clients. In addition, my current responsibilities - serving 500 international clients and managing a team of 97 people - calls for making important decisions through an effective system of delegation and supervision.
When I arrived in Hungary, I thought my role in managing this office would be like piloting an airplane. In fact, I act more as an air traffic control manager. My coworkers here are Hungarian and have local expertise. It is these teams that "pilot the airplane" for each specific project. My role, supported by my international experience, is to anticipate needs, manage communications with my teams and the other Mazars offices, indicate the main directions to take, and take action when an important decision needs to be made.
